How To Make Your Receding Gum Line Grow Back

Many people plagued with a receding gumline often wonder what they can do to reverse receding gums and regrow gum tissue. It can be a huge pain to live with and leads to a whole host of problem. That being said, there are many effective ways to stimulate gum growth and make a receding gum line grow back.

So what causes receding gums in the first place?

Receding gums are mostly caused due to aggressive brushing habits, especially while using a wrong type of toothbrush. Teeth grinding habits (bruxism), vitamin C deficiency (scurvy), gum diseases and infections, tooth decay and even wrongly positioned teeth can cause a receding gumline.

The earliest symptoms of receding gums are often ignored and taken lightly. These include sensitive teeth and bleeding gums. If not taken care of at the right time, these gum problems can lead to extensive gum recession requiring surgical intervention. Honestly, nobody wants that to happen. 

How To Make Your Receding Gum Line Grow Back  

1. Improve your habits

  • Use a soft bristle brush and use circular motions to clean your teeth properly. Instead of brushing hard, brush for longer – twice a day, everyday.
  • Make sure you floss to reach those hard to reach places. You want to avoid build up of tartar and plaque that can worsen your gumline recession. gum disease. If your gums bleed when flossing, you know something’s not right.
  • Rinse well. Use a good anti-microbial mouth wash.
  • Make sure you get deep cleaning done by a dental hygienist once a year. 
  • Avoid tobacco – both in smoke and chewable form.
  • Avoid fermented and acidic food. They tend to dissolve the enamel of the teeth and cause gun recession. 
  • Most people grind and clench their teeth from time to time. This condition has a medical name called bruxism. Although teeth grinding can be caused by anxiety, it often occurs during sleep and may likely be caused by a missing or crooked tooth. It may also be a result of sleep apnea. Try to get on top of this as soon as you can. 

2. Control the gum recession

In order to make your gum line grow back, you need to start controlling the condition.

Mouth Rinses:

  • 3% Hydrogen peroxide for receding gums works well. You can use it in multiple ways to maintain oral hygiene and make your gum line grow back. It has antiviral, antibacterial and anti fungal agent properties which makes it great for stimulating gum growth. Make a 1:1 solution of water and hydrogen peroxide for receding gums. Use 1 cap full to rinse your mouth for 10 minutes daily. You can add baking soda to make a paste and use as a toothpaste. (Caution: Although hydrogen peroxide for receding gums is great, be careful not to ingest the hydrogen peroxide).
Oil Pulling:

Oil pulling for receding gums is a process that makes use of antiseptic oils to make receding gum line grow back and treat gum infections. You can reverse receding gums by using oils like Coconut oil, sesame oil, lemon oil, clove oil, eucalyptus oil or tea tree oil. 

After brushing your teeth, rinse your mouth thoroughly with coconut oil or a little warmed-up sesame oil. Do this 1-2 minutes a day. Gradually increase the time, taking it up to 15-20 minutes daily.

Another oil pulling technique to make receding gum line grow back includes using lemon oil and olive oil (1/2 to 1 lemon juice in 1/4-1/2 cup olive oil). Rub this solution onto your gums once a week only (since it has an acidic nature which can tear down enamel).

For eucalyptus oil, dilute it (1-2 drops in 1-2 tablespoon water) before applying on the gumline to stimulate gum growth.

As far as clove oil is concerned, 1-2 drops is enough. Apply it on your gum line and gently massage it in.(Caution: If you are on blood clotting medication, consult your doctor before using clove oil.)

Baking Soda 

Backing soda is a great way to stimulate gum growth and make your gum line grow back. A lot of people wonder how to reverse receding gums.

Research has shown baking soda to be a potent gum stimulant. Baking soda may be used as a paste, mixed with 3% hydrogen peroxide, or 50:50 solution with sea salt. Massage any of these baking soda solution directly onto your receding gum line for for best results.

Sumac tree

Sumac tree has stringent qualities that help make receding gums grow back. They stimulate gums growth and clean teeth, preventing them from decay and damage.

Aloe Vera is known for its anti-inflammatory and cell repairing capabilities. It reduces the inflammation of the gums and also activates cells that are important for tissue repair.

Aloe vera also has anti-bacterial properties that help keep the infections away from the mouth. There are two ways to use aloe vera gel for receding gums –  brushing or mouthwash.

Green Tea

Green tea has catechins, an antioxidant that can help combat existing gum disease and regrow gums. These catechins strengthen the bond between the gums and teeth. The anti-inflammatory properties of green tea also reduces the swelling of gums that obstructs proper healing of gum diseases.

Oil Pulling to Stimulate gum growth:

You can use a variety of oils to help with your receding gumline. Oils like coconut oil, sesame oil, lemon oil, clove oil, eucalyptus oil or tea tree oil will do wonders. We’ve discussed these before as one of the ways to prevent gum recession. They work equally well for reversing receding gums.

4. Check for vitamin deficiencies

A lack of different vitamins can be cause behind your receding gums. You can check below for the symptoms to see if you may be suffering from a vitamin deficiency that is causing the gum recession and treat it accordingly. 

  • Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) deficiency: Shiny red lips, sore tongue, cracks and sores at the corner of the mouth.
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin) deficiency: Red and/or swollen tip of tongue with dry, smooth edges, sores at mouth edges, general mouth pain.
  • Vitamin B6 deficiency: Sore burning mouth, sores at edge of mouth, smooth tongue.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency: Bad breath, sores at edge of mouth, bright red tongue that may have fissures, loss of taste, dry mouth, numbness and bleeding.
  • Vitamin C or A deficiency: Bleeding gums, lowered immune response, infections (like yeast infection) in mouth and impaired taste.
  • Vitamin D deficiency: Softening of teeth, increased bleeding and yeast infections.

You can make your receding gum line grow back by treating the underlying vitamin deficiencies and taking care of the problem at its source.
